CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Raven…is that you?” A hoarse voice called out from somewhere in the cabin. It was Marcus. I’m not sure if he knows that we use this as an alternate communication.

“Yes sir. Can we come in?” I asked quietly.

“Who is with you?” He demanded.

“Just Clay, Sir, we came to help.” I answered.

“How do I know it is just you?” He demanded.

“Please, Marcus, I had to leave Jeb and RJ with our mothers. Anna is beside herself and the mountain won’t run without the right amount of people. We wouldn’t be out here in a blizzard if we weren’t here to help.” I pleaded. Clay was starting to look a little pissed off. “Stay calm, Clay, you don’t know what they’ve been through.”

“I can’t get to the door, Raven. Maybe you ought to just leave.” He moaned.

“How is my father?” I hated to ask but I had to. Something was off.

“He’s out…I haven’t been able to wake him. Go home, Raven, we will never make it back.” He wasn’t making a lot of sense so I think he may be delirious.

“I cannot help you if you won’t let us inside. Marcus, are you going to shoot me when I open this door? I have to see my Dad.” I told him calmly.

“No…no…if you can get it open…” He moaned and was muttering something that I couldn’t make out. I liked Marcus but I admit that I don’t know him well. He seemed like a good man. What would he think when he found out that Sam and Brian were dead? Sam was his brother and Brian, his nephew. Well, hopefully, the subject won’t come up.

I used my knife to break into the house. Clay grinned at me. Yes, this is something that seems to come easy for me. RJ use to kid me about it also. Clay backed me up with a pistol as we entered the dim cabin slowly. After the blinding snow, it was hard to make things out. We found them in the main room. A large kerosene heater sat in the fire place. They had the other rooms draped off and it made the living room bearable. Dad was on a cot and I hurried to him while Clay checked out Marcus.

“Dad, can you hear me?” I asked him and tried a pressure point. “Come on, Dad, talk to me.” Nothing…there was no response. “Marcus, tell me what happened.” Clay had sat Marcus up and fed him jerky strips and gave him a canteen of water. The man was starving. “Please Marcus, talk while you eat. This is important. I need to know Dad’s injuries quickly so that I can treat him.” I gave up and started a head to toe assessment on my own. The details could come later. Marcus said nothing, he just ate. Clay and I exchanged worried looks. The man was acting downright weird.

Dad had a graze on the right side of his head just above his temple. It was just the opposite of the one that I had the night that the Jeffers’ shot up the truck.
